Yesterday, the State College Spikes suffered a rough setback on the road, falling 6-2 to the Williamsport Crosscutters. Here’s how it happened:
PERRY TOSSES A GEM
Crosscutters’ RHP Gavin Perry pitched 6 scoreless innings to help propel his team to victory. In that span, he struck out 6 batters, walking only 2 and allowing 1 hit. He did all of this in just 76 pitches, as the Eastern New Mexico prospect continues to show scouts why he’s ready for the draft.
TOO LATE TO COME BACK
The Spikes offense was stalled for most of the day, going 5-for-29 in their at-bats with 7 walks. The only highlight of the day (offensively) for the Spikes came in the top of the 7th inning when CF Samuel Benjamin hit a two-run home run, his 6th of the season. The Spikes were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 7 runners on base.
BACK-END BULLPEN SHINES
After a rough day from Douglas Bauer (3 ER in 0.2 IP), Ben Plumley and Drake Quinn were able to limit the damage. Plumley, a primary closer, pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 7th. Quinn finished the job in the bottom of the 8th inning, striking out the side in his only inning of work.
