THURSDAY: Penn State 8, Maryland 4

  • The Nittany Lions led early and often, as Mason Horwat helped seal the deal after 4 shutout innings to close the game. Adam Cecere's 3-run home run in the top of the 6th inning helped put the game away for Penn State.

FRIDAY #1: Penn State 6, Maryland 5 (10 innings)

  • In a game that was back-and-forth through most of the way, the Nittany Lions' go-ahead run came in the form of a throwing error at home plate in the top of the 10th inning. Mason Horwat shut it down for the second consecutive day, delivering the game's final out in the form of a swinging strikeout with bases loaded.

FRIDAY #2: Penn State 19, Maryland 7

  • In a crucial game to save the season, the Nittany Lions brought home the bacon in the top of the 9th inning with 2 three-run home runs to cap off a big win to clinch the series sweep. Freshman pitchers Matt Morash, Mason Butash, and Will Perkowski combined for 6 strikeouts and 1 earned run in 5.1 innings of work.

  • W: Matt Morash (1.1 IP, 1 SO, 0 ER, 25 pitches)

Player of the Weekend: 2B Kevin Michaels [7-for-12, 2 HR, 5 RBI]

  • Michaels quietly put together the best weekend of his season, hitting 2 home runs in Games 1 and 3 of the Maryland series. He had multiple hits in each of the three games, and helped provide stability at the second baseman position.

Pitcher of the Weekend: RHP Mason Horwat [7 IP, 2 SO, 0 ER]

  • Horwat did the impossible as he pitched three shutout innings the day after tossing 43 pitches and four shutout innings to seal the deal and bring home a series win. Despite not recording many shutouts, opponents only got 3 hits in 22 at-bats (.136 oba) against him on Thursday and Friday.

Next Weekend

Penn State heads to Omaha for the Big Ten Tournament from Tuesday to Sunday. Tuesday's game will be against Illinois, and it will start at 6:00 PM.
